Jimmy Phelps Scores Second-Place Finish and a Win in Start to Super DIRTcar Series All-Star Weekend
Looks Forward to Tonight's Main Event

Jimmy PhelpsMOORESVILLE, N.C. (July 17, 2010) - Heinke-Baldwin Racing (HBR) driver Jimmy Phelps continued his successful 2010 Super DIRTcar Series season, finishing second at Brewerton Speedway on Thursday, July 15 and winning at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on Friday, July 16. He will return to Cayuga County Fair Speedway tonight for the final events of All-Star Weekend.

The No. 98H HBR team traveled to Brewerton Speedway on Thursday with high hopes for a good finish at a track Phelps races at weekly in his family-owned Phelps Motorsports car. Phelps laid down the sixth-quickest lap in qualifying at a time of 14.784 seconds (81.169 mph). He finished third in his heat race, but started on the pole in the main event after the top-12 redrew for their starting positions.

Phelps started strong, taking off at the beginning of the race. He led the first 10 laps before falling to second on the lap 11 restart. Phelps spent the remainder of the race in second position, coming close but never being able to pass leader Matt Sheppard.

"We started up front but kind of fell victim to not really knowing what else was out there as far as the race track goes," Phelps explained. "We ran the same line the entire time we were leading. After the restart, Matt ended up sneaking past me. We were good enough to stay with him and even take a look at passing him, but we just never could get back by him."

Phelps spent Friday working at his full-time day job before traveling the five minutes from work to Weedsport, N.Y., for the first of two nights of All-Star Weekend racing at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. His car was immediately fast, as the No. 98H Wave Energy/Mohawk Northeast Troyer racecar laid down the fourth-fastest time in qualifying.

The Baldwinsville, N.Y. native won his heat race and again got lucky, redrawing the top spot in the qualifying redraw. However, Phelps dropped back following the green flag, running in second and third through the mid-point of the race. On lap 25, Phelps moved back up into second, setting his sights on the top spot. On the lap 28 restart, the veteran driver passed the No. 9 of Matt Sheppard on the high side, taking over the lead. He led the remaining 22 laps, scoring his third Super DIRTcar Series win of 2010.

"It's kind of ironic, because both Thursday and Friday's races were very similar in regards to it being me and Matt racing for the lead," Phelps said. "It was kind of the opposite of the Brewerton race. I snuck by him on the restart, we were both about the same speed, and I ended up outrunning him to the end. We've both been lucky, redrawing well, but we've also probably been the two fastest cars on the track lately."

Phelps currently sits third in the Super DIRTcar Series standings, 77 points behind leader Billy Decker. He returns to action tonight, racing in the final event of All-Star Weekend at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Today's race will feature two 25-lap segments, which will determine the qualifying order for the 50-lap main event.
